Warning Signs Your AC Needs Repair Before It Fails

Warning Signs Your AC is in Need of Repair

There are certain telltale signs an air conditioner is on its way to failure. Unusual noises from the unit? Some rooms in the house that will not cool off no matter how you have the thermostat set? A power bill that has been on the rise with your comfort to show for it?

You could be dealing with an AC issue and it will not improve on its own. We at Shield Heating and Cooling can put an end to that. For over 30 years our family-run operation has been of service in the Greater Baton Rouge area; we know a thing or two about nipping trouble in the bud before it becomes a breakdown. Give us a ring at (225) 396-4590 and speak with one of us who can make sense of what your system is saying.

An AC does not have an easy time of it through a Louisiana summer. The system is put to work for months and minor things can accumulate. But an AC will generally give some warning before it gives up, one only has to be on the lookout for them.

Strange Noises

You should be able to count on a steady hum from a well-maintained machine. Newfangled sounds are your system’s way of communicating. Be on the alert for any of the following:

  • Grinding or scraping indicative of wear and tear
  • Squealing, perhaps a belt or motor matter
  • Banging or clanking of a part that has come loose
  • Repeated clicking at startup
  • An electrical problem manifesting as a buzz

It is unlikely these will go away of their own accord. Letting a worn piece continue to run invites more damage to adjoining parts. Better to put an ear to it and effect a less costly repair while you can.

Uneven Temperatures and Poor Airflow

Your system is under duress if the vents are not moving much air or you have a room that is warm and another like a walk-in freezer. A clogged filter, duct issues or a blower on its last legs will do this. We address such matters as part of our indoor air quality services; proper airflow is essential for comfort.

Cold Air Not Coming Through

On a hot day there is nothing worse than an AC putting out warm or room-temperature air. In the heat of Baton Rouge it is something you do not want to put off. It is a sure sign of a refrigerant or compressor problem, or some other part of the outdoor unit giving way. Have it seen to in short order.

The Story Your Power Bill Tells

If the bill is higher than this month last year and you have not altered your ways, the AC is probably working overtime. An inefficient system is costing you in energy every hour it is on. A tune-up or some repairs will put the strain back on the unit and not your wallet.

Short Cycling

When the AC goes on for a few minutes and then shuts down to start up again, that is short cycling. Whether due to the thermostat, an oversized system or a refrigerant issue, it is rough on the equipment and does little for your home’s comfort.

Leaks, Moisture or Smells

Do not overlook musty or burning scents, ice on the coils or water around the unit. A leak may be a drainage or refrigerant concern, odors can be mold in the ducts or electrical in nature.

There is no advantage to waiting for a full breakdown. Fixing a small problem is easier and less of an expense. And it is better for the longevity of the system and the investment made in it. Our team makes sure a job is done right.
